A very mixed bag (but a great trip!)

This is a difficult review to write, as we are quite torn - On one hand, we had an absolutely amazing trip - spectacular diving, lovely people, and our cabin and the boat generally were perfectly nice. But it would be remiss not to give an honest review of the dive operation itself, because honestly there was a lot that was not good, and overall, when we return to the Maldives, we will find a different operator. The good: 1. Being a budget boat, the price was fairly affordable compared to other operators. In my experience, that also tends to attract nice laid back people, and that was definitely our experience. We made new friends and will definitely keep in touch with them! (but be aware that equipment rental is more expensive than other boats). 2. The kitchen and bar staff were SO lovely and kind. For example, I told them I like my food spicy and they brought me freshly toasted chilli for every meal! Also, the beach BBQ was beautifully prepared and the table they dug us in the sand was super cute. 3. The boat was nice - we had the Junior Suite which was awesome - couldn't have been better! It was huge and right up at the front of the boat. The bad: 1. There was no real leadership on the boat or on the dives. One of the guides/instructors was an awesome guy who we loved (Mutu), but he was a freelancer so wasn't in charge. Other dive crew were nice, but there just wasn't any real leadership. It's hard to describe, but there was just a general blasé attitude from the staff that didn't fill one with confidence. Fortunately, the divers were quite experienced so - for example - when we got separated from our guide on the night dive because of strong current (far too strong for a night dive) - we didn't panic and managed to surface and call the boat over. However, we had been given no protocol for this in advance. 2. There was terrible communication between the office admin and the boat/dive crew. We had all filled out forms in advance detailing exactly what equipment we needed (including reef hooks which we were told upon booking would be free of charge). When we arrived on the boat, there was no equipment for us and not enough reef hooks. Information we had been given about arrival time was also wrong and inconsistent. Equipment prices were inconsistent. We ended up having to stay an extra night near Male to get the equipment sorted, and so ended up doing the same dive (Shark Tank - see below) three times. 3. There was no emphasis on safety on the boat at all. We were onboard for a week, but never knew where the fire exits were, nor life jackets, nor were we given any instructions regarding fire or emergency protocols. No certification or medical cards were checked from anyone. 4. The 'free Nitrox' was always around EAN27. I'm not even sure if there was an option to dive on air (Nitrox cert cards were not checked at any point... nor any dive cert cards for that matter). In any event, EAN27 is not really the right level for this type of diving and we ran out of NDL time every day. 4. I personally don't like chumming on dives. I would much prefer to just dive and see what we see. I found the 'Shark Tank' dive particularly bad. Of course, it was amazing to see the sharks (and I accept that they are there for the chum). But seeing a diver from another boat swim up and touch a tiger shark sums up the problem with this place. There is not enough respect for nature and the ethos of diving. Fortunately, there were enough of us onboard that weren't into chumming so we separated from them and did our own exploring. The neutral: 1. The food was ok. I understand that it is difficult to please everyone - some like spicy others hate it. There was a lot of cooked tuna which was a bit dry, and the food became a bit repetitive. However, given that this is a budget boat, this is not something that bothered me much. Some meals were good (eg. chicken curry, tuna/coconut paratha breakfast). 2. The boat was quite run down. For example, our show

Better then expected

On the trip we saw everything you can see in Maldives: 3 whale sharks, 30 manta rays, schools of white , black tip sharks, grey reef sharks, tiger shark, guitar shark, school of spinner sharks, giant hammerhead. The crew took us on the best dive sites, and almost everywhere we were the only boat. Staff was kind and they did everything for us. The room was very comfortable. The only thing I would change is about food. I would like to have more local food and fish dishes and less Eurpean. Otherwise 10/10 Will come back

Diving and price great, but quality poor.

The best part was the diving, simply because there is a lot of underwater life. The dive sites are very good. The cabins are very good. And the price is low. But unfortunately, the other one was below average. I also have to say this boat was not supposed to start this week because the customers were missing and in the last 2 days we decided differently as there were several reservations. And that's why I guess a B-team was brought in, as examples: second "dive master" couldn't even dive (no proper buoyancy, constant blows on the corals), chaotic organization in the boat and under water, the cook can't cook (all the fish and chicken was cooked too long and therefore hard), and the worst thing was .... no spare equipment (no extra regulators, tanks, fins, masks and NO dive lights).
