From Tiger Sharks to Nighttime Whale Sharks: A Truly Special Maldives Liveaboard
We just finished a fantastic liveaboard trip in the Deep South of Maldives with Carpe Diem and overall had a wonderful experience. One of the biggest highlights was the incredible wildlife we encountered throughout the trip. We were lucky enough to see tiger sharks, thresher sharks, grey reef sharks, silvertip sharks, and mantas. One particularly unforgettable moment happened one evening when the crew set up a light at the back of the boat, which attracts plankton — and with it, large marine life. That night three whale sharks came to feed under the boat. Those of us who wanted jumped in with fins, snorkel and cameras. The whale sharks were feeding right in front of us only a few meters away, while devil rays were gliding past below us. The dive guides, Munkko, Saaz, and Wathey, were excellent: professional, knowledgeable and clearly passionate about the ocean. Their briefings were clear, they managed the groups very well and helped us get the most out of each dive. Life on the boat was also very enjoyable. The food was very good with plenty of variety, and the boat crew were outstanding — always friendly, helpful and attentive. They worked incredibly hard behind the scenes to make everything run smoothly and create a relaxed atmosphere on board. Interestingly, the boat was supposed to host 20 guests, but in the end there were only the two of us and three other guests due to the current situation in the Middle East and consequently disrupted flights and travel plans. The 5 of us immediately became friends and had such a fun time together throughout the trip. It also worked out perfectly for diving, as we were very much in sync both above and under water — our diving style and air consumption were very similar, which made the dives especially smooth and enjoyable. The only downside for us was the size of our cabin. We had the main deck cabin called “Sea”, which felt quite small with limited space to move around and store gear. The bed, however, was very comfy! It wasn’t a major issue since most of the time is spent diving or relaxing on deck, but it’s something to be aware of. The cabins on the upper deck and the lower deck, which our friends had, were noticeably more spacious — and one small suggestion for the crew: adding Velcro to keep the roll-down curtains from swaying, letting in light or making noise while cruising, would make sleeping even more comfortable (the upper deck cabins already had this). Overall it was a fantastic liveaboard experience with an amazing team and unforgettable diving.

Unforgettable trip!
We had an amazing liveaboard experience in the Maldives. Due to the circumstances many guests cancelled, so in the end there were only five divers on board. It felt like a private trip. We were excellently looked after by three professional guides who safely guided us through the channels and currents. We always felt very well supported and comfortable in the water. The underwater encounters were incredible. We saw a wide range of marine life, including Whale Shark, Manta Ray and many different sharks. We even saw Tiger Shark and Thresher Shark. We decided not to join the feeding dives at the tiger shark site, but were still very lucky: during a blue-water entry we encountered five tiger sharks. Life on board was also great. The food was excellent and the crew took very good care of us throughout the trip. The boat itself is an older model, but well maintained and perfectly comfortable for a dive safari. Overall, it was an outstanding and unforgettable trip. Many thanks to the entire crew!

Great in every way!
This was a great trip. The boat is spacious, clean & comfy. Dining was at an outdoor table, which prompted socialization among all. The food was amazing! The crew was friendly & helpful. The diving was mostly drift & current, in super warm, 85F water. We saw sharks, sharks, mantas, & more sharks. The highlight were 2 close encounters with whale sharks! While hooked in, 1 whale shark swam right over us, so closely. The other was hanging out behind the boat at night & stayed over an hour. People could be in the water w/ it or stand above, inches from it. What an incredible trip!!!

Awesome Dive trip!
The Crew of Carpe Diem were outstanding in every aspect. The were so capable and took such care of all the divers. They found us every marine animal we hoped to see and were professional but so friendly. They couldn’t do enough to make our vacation the best dive experience I’ve ever had. The boat Is beautiful, well equipped and so luxurious, havlnd the tender to dive from is such a pleasure and the Whale sharks and Mantas were everything I had hoped for. If you looking for an unsurpassed dive experience, go with Carpe Diem and her phenomenal crew!

Great boat, crew and food. Fantastic value for money
We have done a few LOBs in the Maldives and around the world so we have enough to compare Carpe Diem with, in one sentence I think it's probably the best value for money LOB in the Maldives. This is not a luxury LOB, but it's also not marketing itself as such. What you will get is a fantastic platform for sleeping, eating and relaxing In more detail: Rooms: Big and spacious, AC good and quiet, WC with hot water and good pressure (do not take this for granted on a boat). Food: Fantastic from chef Nilanka and service from Sean. You will eat a lot of fresh fish caught by the Dhoni crew the night before. You also get to eat 'al fresco' and not inside like in many LOBs. Relaxing: Nice upper deck with shade/sun bathing + good inside space with ACs and coffee / snack area (fresh hot afternoon snacks daily! Not just biscuits) Crew: Munko, Saaz and Wathey did a great job. Detailed briefings, always went in the water first to check the currents, and did a great job putting experienced/similar divers in the same group. Special thanks to Shaaz our guide who did a great job finding lots of macro subjects for us. Dhoni: Great boat and crew. Lots of space, rinse tanks for cameras, HOT showers!, perfect fills for Nitrox 32% too. Also worth to mention they went North of Male to a manta dive site to then sail back south to follow the itinerary as the weather was bad and we couldn't do the crossing to Ari atoll - not every LOB will do this...

My first time
Despite ropey weather (extending shoulder season), the trip was amazing, saw everything I wanted, safely and efficiently. Great team. Food was really good, and much better than I expected. Worth knowing you get into Male on Friday pm 1600, might have done other things as Male is not the best part of the (amazing) Maldives

Excellent experience!
Great trip - tons of mantas, a brief hammerhead sighting, the Thanksgiving dinner, the dive guides' freehand drawing skills of the sites, lovely beach barbecue, great spread of tropical fruits with breakfast. Fantastic crew and customer service. Food was overall 4.5 stars - just a few things were overly salty and the shrimp was somehow always overcooked but everything else was delicious. Company had a rep on board who regularly audits trips to make sure customers are happy and continually improve their product which is great to see. Very nice dive dhoni - super well maintained, clean bathroom, helpful crew ready with a spare o-ring when needed. Would have liked to see dive guides rotate and they had a bit of a challenge managing a pair of divers whose consumption, even on XL tanks, shortened dives so they should have rotated them as well instead of sticking them with the same group! Dive sites also got congested with other boats despite the companies supposedly deconflicting itineraries - it seems the Maldives has hit that point, but would have liked to see the schedule staggered or some other creativity to get us away from congestion. Would go with this company or boat again if we came back to the Maldives!

Just brilliant...
Carpe Diem is a very well oiled machine. Everything is meticulously planned and things happen seamlessly. The crew are experienced, caring and great fun and never once made us feel like we were just another bunch of clients. We really felt special! They give the best dive briefings we have ever had and nothing is left to chance. A current check before every dive means no surprises. And when there IS a surprise, the crew swing into action. I had an altercation with a Moray eel that resulted in the need for an emergency ascent and a trip to hospital for stitches. I can't thank Munkko and the crew enough for their care and concern and the professional way in which they handled the incident. I felt completely safe in what was a pretty freaky experience. For the boat, the food was excellent and abundant - they cater really well for all tastes and food orientations. The cabins were spacious and comfortable and the bathrooms were plenty big enough to share. With a maximum of 20 guests the boat never feels crowded and there are lots of spaces where you can hide out and read a book or check your photos. We went on the Best of Maldives safari which cruised both north and south of Male. The mantas were simply spectacular and we saw enough sharks to last a lifetime! But for the macro lover there are some lovely pinnacle tops with plenty of clownfish living in the most iridescent pink anemones I have ever seen. We found a couple of nudibranchs, so don't leave your strobe behind thinking there won't be any macro life. But it was the fish life that really was the star. I think the fact that people on our trip were back for the second, third or fourth time speaks for itself. This was a brilliant experience
