Excellent place for basing yourself for a Galapagos trip. Airport works very well, there are excellent hotels close by. Don't be put off by the safety concerns some people raise as we had three stays there over five weeks and would happily go again.

What to know about diving in Guayaquil

Where is Guayaquil?

Guayaquil is Ecuador's largest city, sitting on the Guayas River near the Pacific coast in the country's southwest, distinct from Quito, the mountain-based capital. It's also one of two mainland gateway cities (along with Quito) that most travelers pass through en route to the Galapagos.

What is there to do in Guayaquil?

The Malecón 2000 riverside promenade, the colorful hillside Las Peñas neighborhood, and the Guayaquil Historical Park are the main draws for a short stay. Most visitors treat it as a one- or two-day stopover before or after their Galapagos trip rather than a standalone destination.

What is Guayaquil known for?

Guayaquil is Ecuador's largest city and main port, known for its riverside Malecón 2000 promenade, the historic Las Peñas neighborhood, and its role as a major gateway to the Galápagos Islands. It's also the country's commercial and economic hub.

Is Guayaquil worth visiting?

For most Galapagos travelers, yes, at least for a night — its waterfront Malecón and Las Peñas district offer a pleasant, walkable introduction to coastal Ecuador, and its airport often has the shortest flight time to the islands. It's not typically a multi-day destination on its own, but it's far from just a layover city.

How far is Guayaquil from Quito?

The two cities sit about 270 miles (430 km) apart by road, a drive of roughly 7 to 8 hours through the Andes, though nearly all travelers fly between them instead, a trip of around 45 minutes. Both cities have flights to the Galapagos, so which one you use often depends on your international routing.

How do you get from Guayaquil to the Galapagos?

Direct flights from Guayaquil's José Joaquín de Olmedo International Airport reach the Galapagos in about 1.5 hours, landing at either Baltra or San Cristóbal. As of 2026, this is generally the shorter and more direct option compared to flying from Quito.

Where should you stay in Guayaquil?

Most visitors choose hotels near the Malecón 2000 waterfront or the Urdesa district, both walkable, well-served areas convenient for a short stopover before or after a Galapagos trip. Staying near the airport is also common for travelers with an early departure.

What is the population of Guayaquil?

Guayaquil's metropolitan area is home to roughly 3 million people, making it Ecuador's most populous city, ahead of the capital, Quito. It's the country's main commercial and shipping hub, as well as a major gateway to the Galapagos.

Is Guayaquil safe?

Like most large Latin American cities, Guayaquil has areas that are safe for tourists and others best avoided, particularly at night; sticking to well-traveled areas like the Malecón 2000 waterfront and Las Peñas neighborhood, and using registered taxis or rideshare apps, covers most visitors' needs. As of 2026, it's worth checking current travel advisories, since safety conditions in parts of the city have fluctuated in recent years.
