Good value for money

Was on the 21 Dec 8d7n BDE route. Crew was friendly, dives was great. Although there were 2 minor set backs, a. One of the zodiacs had some issues mid trip and we had to carry on with only one. b. A food bug that was going around causing some minor stomach issues

Overall good, but mixed bag

The good: Some nice dive sites (the reef at Elphinstone is healthy, we saw dolphins there and oceanic mantas at Daedalus, and the topography in the south is stunning). Lovely group of guests and nice staff (shout out to Khalid!). A couple of the dive guides did a good job, a couple less so. Snorkelling with dolphins was fun. Comfortable rooms and boat, in general. Also like the way it’s inclusive of extra drinks. Overall, quite good for a Red Sea liveaboard, but not especially good compared to other countries. Good value at the discounted rate (not the full rate). The bad: Unfortunately most reefs were looking very stressed, especially in the south. There looks to have been a very damaging event this year, and much of the coral looks to be dead. Many sites were correspondingly not very fishy. Organisation was often chaotic, and one group of divers were severely hamstrung by a perfectly nice family who should have had their own group, which would be easily rectified if the dive guides didn’t take dives off. Occasionally one dive guide was back on the boat before all divers were, and one guide was a bit rude at times. Two days at Daedalus was too much when we only had two dives at Elphinstone, a much healthier reef. We also basically repeated some of the same sites there when we could have used those for new sites. Trying to sell a poor quality video of the trip (including stock footage of stuff we didn’t see, like oceanic white tips) for $65 was strange. About 40% guests got bad stomach issues on the penultimate and final days, likely due to poor food hygiene (food otherwise fine). The meal out in Port Ghalib was enjoyable because of the guests, but it’s odd that it wasn’t a regular meal onboard, especially when the port is a bizarre, overpriced place. Asking people to tip in front of staff is just plain awkward and is unhelpful when several guests were disgruntled.

The people. Some cool diving (oceanic mantas, dolphins, topography). Comfortable boat.
