What to expect on a Half Moon Caye Liveaboard

Liveaboards to Half Moon Caye offer divers the chance to explore one of the most picturesque dive sites in Belize. Situated only 25 mins north of the Great Blue Hole, Half Moon Caye sits at the lower southeast corner of Lighthouse Reef. The island is crescent-shaped and a national park, home to the red-footed booby birds, a protected species on the endangered list, found only in Belize and on the Galapagos Islands. Mixed with diverse wildlife, both above and below the sea, a liveaboard to Half Moon Caye is a great addition to your Belize itinerary.

What You Can See

Beneath the pristine, clear blue waters, the reef crest is crowned with staghorn coral that almost acts as a barrier to the sharp wall that drops steeply to a shallow shelf at about 6m/20ft where garden eels peek and burying back into their holes as you approach. From there a gentle sandy slope gradually leads to a drop off at 13m/43ft down to depths of 30m/100ft. Numerous fissures in the reef covered in soft coral, barrel sponges, fans, tube sponges and gorgonians visited by the occasional turtle, make this an unforgettable wall dive. Razorfish, hogfish and toadfish are another common sight on the reef, adjacent to the sloping sand flat. Silver fish shelter in the naturally occuring coral tunnels, glitter with the sunlight. Sandy shelves sometimes harbour large stingrays and nurse sharks. Reef sharks wander in and out of crevices patrolling the outer edge of the wall. If you’re lucky you will see eagle rays or manta rays on the outer walls, gliding over subtle currents.

The depth range of this site ranges from 6-42m/20-138ft and the wall drops-off to an undetermined depth, known by some as “6,000 feet of vertical abyss”. Currents are minimal with very gentle conditions and visibility is usually very good at 30m or more. Half Moon Caye wall is considered an intermediate dive site and one might wish to dive it more than once to truly appreciate its beauty. Getting To Half Moon Caye

Half Moon Caye of Lighthouse Reef Atoll is located 55 miles east of Belize City. To get there, Belize liveaboards depart from the Radisson Ft. George dock, located in the heart of downtown Belize City. International flights to Belize depart regularly from around the world, often with a transfer in Miami, Florida. If you are landing at Belize City International Airport (BZE), transfer is provided to and from the yachts.
