Surrounded by walls and set off bow towers, Korčula Town may be the best example of a coastal Dalmatian town in all of Croatia. The city culminates at an old central Plaza flanked by medieval and renaissance style architecture. St. Marcs Cathedral is a famous historical stop. The Town Museum and Icon Museum are nearby the Plaza and All Saints Church.

You'll work up an appetite after your walking tour so it will be high time for a stop by one of the many restaurants, bars, and cafes. The prices are reasonable and the area is known for excellence in food.

In July and August, the traditional Moreska Sword Dance takes place, where two teams dressed in red and black tell a rich story of emotion and conflict. Best time to cruise Korčula

Time to plan ahead for the best time to visit Korčula. Most of the year, you'll be greeted by good weather and all of the activities you desire. Travel to Korčula in May and June or September and October is smart because it is just before the most popular season. Activities are open, the weather is pleasant, warm enough for swimming but not too oppressive to enjoy a bike ride on the island.

By July and August, the guests are arriving and things are getting crowded. The temperatures creep up, making this a great time of year to lounge of the beach or play in the clear water along the pebble beaches. This is also the time of year to take in a viewing of the Moreska Sword Dance.

It's trickier to travel to Korčula in November to April. Lodging is scarce during this off-season and most of the activities are shut down. Some do enjoy travel during this time of year to experience the real Korčula.

Where do Korčula Island cruises depart from?

When you're ready to embark on your Croatia cruise, you'll fly into one of the international airports. You can land in Zagreb, Dubrovnik, Pula, Split, Opatija or Zadar. The most helpful thing is to consult your specific itinerary to see your departure port. This will help you choose the closest airport to land at.

• Remember your sun protection and clothes you can layer for your comfort.
• For walking the old town and your biking excursions, comfortable and rugged shoes are a must. A pair of water shoes is also important in case you want to jump into the water.
